Hersh and Karen Kendall began gardening organically in the early 70’s and expanded their talents and their acreage when they bought Indian Hills Farm 20 years ago. In 2001 the farm became certified as organic and the Kendall’s have been expressing their green thumbs ever since. Today they cultivate several acres of their Smithville area farm specifically for growing vegetable such as lettuce, cucumber, egg plant, and zucchini; and for producing fruits like apples, pears, peaches and figs. They also enjoy growing unique heirloom variety vegetables and offer them as a vibrant alternative to the average store bought produce which are cultivated for long shelf life rather than taste.
In fact one of the main crops at IHF is heirloom tomatoes. With names like Brandywine, Caspian Pink, Cherokee Purple, and Paragon, these tomatoes are a real hit with huge sized fruit and amazing flavor. In addition, the farm grows 4 varieties of black berries, 6 varieties of figs, 4 types of eggplant and many more fruits and vegetables to keep one’s body healthy and one’s palate pleased. |
